About: Welcome to EXPAND! Our mission is to enrich the lives of individuals with physical disabilities through recreational activities, fostering personal development and growth. Our team comprises Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) committed to ensuring that people of all abilities can experience the joy of life through our programs. Since our inception, we have strived to promote inclusivity and empower individuals to thrive, both on and off the water.
In 1983, Jim Ziegler launched the adaptive water ski program at Boulder Reservoir, Colorado, using his own resources and volunteers recruited through his business, Medco Supply. Inspired by a similar program in California, Ziegler sought city support, leading to the involvement of the City of Boulder’s EXPAND program in 1988. As city funding waned, EXPAND Beyond, Inc. was established in 2007 to secure additional financial aid and equipment for the program. Jim Ziegler remains active in the initiative, serving on the board of EXPAND Beyond.
