What is a sit water ski?
Boy oh boy, do we get this question a lot. A sit water ski is most commonly referenced as a broad board ski with a metal chair attachment, that is used by the adaptive water sports community. The term sit waterski is sometimes interchanged between the adaptive version and the more extreme single board ski that utilizes a metal hydrofoil underneath. But when most people ask “what a sit-down waterski is”, they are generally talking about the version that is used by those with physical impairments that would otherwise keep them from using a traditional set of 2 water skis. A sit water ski has a metal caged style seat for the rider. These seats typically come in one size with minimal adjustments and are interchangeable from the boards.
Is it safe to use a sit water ski?
When participating in any water sports, there is always an inherent risk. This can sound pretty intimidating for anyone outside the water sports community. However, the sit water ski is relatively safe compared to other water sport equipment. The ski is very large and buoyant. Some sit water skis can get as big as 20 inches wide. With all this in mind, it makes sense that boats don;t have to travel fast to get adaptive waterskis moving. In fact, more riders are in for a slow relaxed time on the water.
Most sit skis come notched and with a starting block that helps hold the rope in place while in motion. The seats fixed onto the water sit skis are typically in a caged formation with a high back design to allow for more stability and less core strength needed. An adaptive ski isn’t the only piece of equipment you need to get time on the water. For a full comprehensive list on adaptive water ski equipment check this article here!
